The career start of Jon Fitch ranks him among MMA's best
Rising mixed martial arts star Jon Fitch has found a home in San Jose.
It's from here that the former Purdue wrestler - and now contender for the Ultimate Fighting Championship's welterweight title - is launching his path toward a championship when he takes on Georges St. Pierre in UFC 87 at the Target Center in Minneapolis tonight.
If he does take the 170-pound title from the favored Canadian, he will in large part give thanks to the gym he calls home in his adopted city.
"The champ is here!" yelled local MMA star Josh Thomson from inside the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) on Hillsdale Avenue recently.
Thomson, the 155-pound champion of San Jose-centric organization Strikeforce, was entering the ring to prepare Fitch for his title bout. Their high-caliber sparring prompted passerby to stop and gawk at AKA's window.
Fitch, 30, and a Fort Wayne, Indiana, native, began his MMA career in 2002 after a four-year wrestling career at Purdue University. He said he was a listless grad school student when he packed his life and 1-year-old bulldog into his 1990 Buick Regal and hit the road for San Jose. Read more..
